My Prattle:
This was my first Thai movie. And still is the only Thai movie I've ever watched. As the name says, it has all the elements of a first love, I mean "everything", literally. It can relate to every one of us in some way or the other. After watching it you'll understand why this is a must post in this list.
The cast was very good. Everyone was just perfect for their roles. The main cast i.e, for the roles of Nam, Shone and Teacher Inn, standout the most, action wise among others. The girl who did the role of Nam was really good. I liked the way she acted in the last scenes where she finally confesses to Shone.
The story depicts love in the eyes of young people, when they first begin to experience it. It shows how it can affect their lives and aspirations. Nam is an ordinary high school girl, who has a crush on the most popular boy in school. She's considered unattractive in general. But that doesn't deter her from giving it her all to get Shone to notice her. The things Nam and her friends do, to get Nam noticed by Shone are funny and cute. Shone is the the perfect depiction of every high school girl's dream guy. He's handsome, generous and the most popular boy in school. But inside he's just like any other high school boy, awkward and shy at expressing his feelings to the girl he like's. Teacher Inn is the major supporting role in the movie. Her story runs on the sidelines and mostly adds to the comedy of the movie.
I didn't like the way they showed so much difference in her skin tone. Yeah I get the point that she's supposed to be an ordinary unattractive high school girl, who begins to change herself to get her noticed by the one she loves. But I think the difference in the two skin tones was way too big to be considered normal. Other than the skin tone, the way she wears her school uniform, hair etc also change. I almost thought that she was a completely different person altogether. One factor might be, the out of ordinary skin whitening, but other than that, she also seemed taller and like a completely different person to me. So i had to pause and go back to the starting scenes and compare and see to confirm that she's the same person. And I was surprised from what I found. I never knew that things, as small and insignificant as, how we wear our school uniform can bring so much difference in the way we look.
I also didn't like the ending. I am not getting down to specifics as I don't want this to be a spoiler. It just didn't seem natural. But if we don't consider the realistic and naturalness of the turn of events, then the ending's good.
It is said to be inspired by a true story. I am not sure if that's true. It's a really sweet, cute and innocent depiction of love from the eyes of young, when they first begin to feel it. It mostly targets the teen and might not suit the tastes of adult audience. But I think that even they can relate to this story, as it can be a reminder of their feelings when they first experienced love.
Clippings:
This was my first Thai movie. And believe me my experience wasn't good at all.
ReplyDeleteThe movie takes up slow and never reaches the fifth gear. The movie predominantly revolves around the school life but it is unable to capture the essence of it. All you see is a bunch of silly students trying to lure the boys they like. Even the story doesn't spare the teachers who seem more interested in their male colleagues rather than teaching the students.
The story lacks content and the execution is what makes you cringe the most. The suspense of the movie doesn't seem like a suspense anymore when it is revealed at the almost end of the story. The dialogue are really upsetting.
Although the director Wasin Pokpong wanted to tell this story from the eyes of a naïve girl who falls in love with her senior P'shong and It was meant to be jounrney that will change her completely and make her a better person but the ups and downs and the poor writing makes the viewer lose the touch. I must say the actress ,Pimchanok Luevisadpaibul , is the only one that keeps the movie going. The pool scene was acted quite well by her but then too it's the only memorable scene in the movie.
Actor Mario Maurer does no good to the movie and seems to be kept in it only for his boyish charm.
After interval you seriously began to feel as to why are you watching this move? It has got absolutely nothing to offer to you. And the ending seems to be funny than emotional.
I would not recommend this movie to anyone. its a serious wastage of 2 hrs. of your precious life. Believe me, I'd rather prefer sleeping.
A very seriously bad movie, or lack of movie really. I kept watching and watching and about half way through I was wondering why I was still watching as nothing changed. The characters never change, they have the same naivety and mindset as when they are first shown in the movie.
ReplyDeleteThe main message we receive from the lead fem. is disgusting. Continually the movie applauds those with lighter skin. Though we do see the 'everyone is unique despite physical appearance' theme a lot in movies, it never really gets old. Seeing this movie not embrace that common theme was sad.
It's upsetting that the characters get together in less than 10 minutes at the very end of the movie where as normally by at least halfway the characters are an item and during the rest of the movie test their relationship through ups and downs.
We spend close to 110 mins just watching the character do nothing to actually get together. Suddenly we are forced to believe that the male lead has liked her all along. The only thing that kept the movie going was the comedy.
Also having a 9 year gap so so so late into the movie was just wrong. It seemed rushed and really unnecessary.
I also feel as though too much of the movie was wasted upon the teacher. No one really came out to see the teacher and her 'love-life', if anything i assumed she would be either hindering or helping the lead couple to get together.
Poor planning, poor execution, bad message. insanely slow start and super rushed ending, cringe-worthy leads and poor-excuse of a film is what I would describe this 'movie' as.
